I attended the Learn to Swim class at UNSW Fitness and Aquatic Centre. The pool was huge with plenty of lanes for practice. Anirban was an excellent trainer who taught us proper techniques and encouraged us to push our boundaries.

The pool is overcrowded and the lane availability advertised online often does not match the reality - do not rely too much about it and in general avoid afternoon and early evenings, almost every lane is blocked with classes, waterpolo etc.
Also, almost every locker in the dressing room is out of order, dirty and worn out.
The showers and toilets are in barely presentable conditions, and so is the sauna/steam room.
Overall, maintenance needs to be improved drastically, but I’ve now been going for almost 2 years and only seems to get worse.

The squash courts could definitely use better maintenance—the floors are consistently dusty, making play uncomfortable. Ventilation is another issue; with zero airflow, summer games become almost unbearable. And then there’s the rental equipment… the condition of the rackets speaks for itself. When told, ‘these are the best we have,’ it’s hard not to wonder where the entrance fees and tuition costs are actually going.

UNSW FAC is great for its Zumba classes! The only classes that I attend regularly are the Zumba classes taught by Annette. I have attended Zumba classes in various parts of the world and honestly, Annette is the best instructor I have ever come across. Her energy is infectious—she lights up the entire room the moment the music starts. Every class feels like a celebration, not a workout, and her passion for dance and fitness shines through in every move. It’s impossible not to be motivated when she’s leading!

What truly sets her apart is the way she empowers every woman in the room. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned dancer, she makes you feel confident, strong, and supported. She creates a space where everyone feels welcome, and her genuine encouragement lifts not just bodies but spirits. I leave every class feeling happier, healthier, and more connected. She's the heart and soul of Zumba at UNSW FAC!

I did the Learn To Swim program and had Anirban as my instructor. He was the best instructor I could have asked for. So attentive to my needs and very knowledgeable on swimming technique. I would highly recommend him if you get a chance to choose your instructor!

Couple good things about the gym, everyone’s really nice there and the staff are quite nice. Some good machines such as the cable chest press which I like, and they have 0.5kg, 0.75kg, 1.25kg etc plates that make microloading really easy, especially when the machines are all pin loaded. However a lot of the equipment is incredibly run down, old, and consistently broken. and the gym looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in a LONG time. I think it really needs to be cleaned, and machines need to be replaced for better ones (theres also like 4 ab crunch machines which is unnecessary). Overall an ok option due to its proximity, but is in desperate need of renewal/renovation.
