I am extremely disappointed, frustrated, and frankly pissed off about my recent experience at Christ hospital.
My Mother came in on Wednesday 11/27 (night before Thanksgiving) because her nursing home where she resides thought she had a stroke, which was confirmed the next day that she did in fact have a stroke. My sister and I arrived the next morning (Thanksgiving Day). We got there about 9am and she was on the 3rd Floor Surgical ICU in room 330 or 331. We spoke to a doctor about 10 am. This was the ONLY time during her almost week stay-AFTER A STROKE-that we were able to talk to a doctor. The doctor we spoke to on this day I believe her name was Dr. Schiller, younger girl with reddish hair. She's the one that confirmed the stroke, it was caused by hypertension/high BP, they would be doing a swallowing study, and few other details. She was very nice and gave us all the information she could at that point. My sister and I came up again on Saturday 11/30. Her nurses while on this floor, specifically Mary Kate, were amazing. She was awesome.
12/1-I came up again on Sunday 12/1. While I was there Mom got moved out of the ICU onto 4 west, room 4081. Before I left I made sure to tell the nurse, Emma, that we wanted a doctor to call us back in the morning after rounds, specifically my older sister (we are both on her chart with correct phone numbers). I literally saw her type it in the computer as 'pass on notes' for the night nurse who would inevitably be the one to give the message to the doctor in the morning. Guess that didn't happen.
12/2-Monday comes around and no call from a doctor. My sister called up there, and had to try several times since the phone just kept ringing once she was transferred by the operator, and once again had to ask for a doctor to please call her back. I believe the nurse she spoke with was named Abby. No call from a doctor.
12/3- My sister comes up around 10am to visit Mom. When she walked into her room my Mom was covered in filth. My sister thought she may have thrown up but the nurse said it was her coffee? It was all down her shirt and the side of the bed, which we thought was weird. Mom got discharged later that evening and made it back to her nursing home. STILL NO CALL FROM A DOCTOR. I called up myself around 615 pm and spoke with nurse Emily. I explained, in detail, that no doctor had given us a call back when we've asked several times. All we wanted was 15 minutes of someone's time to ask what we should expect for our Mom in the coming weeks/months, what's her prognosis, what should we look out for, what meds, if any, were updated, added, or changed. Anything about PT/OT, which we knew she'd need, but it would still have been nice to hear from an actual doctor about all this. When explaining all this to Emily I even asked "Do doctor's not talk to families anymore?", she even said the attending doctor should be able to call me back- and I'm sure you can guess NO ONE CALLED ME BACK. I don't care that she was discharged that day/night, someone still should have called me back. I asked her what doctor's had seen her and she mentioned Dr. Ngasi (probably spelling that wrong), and Dr. Gurney who was the resident doctor.
My Mom is now back at her nursing home but we were just told today that she is unable to feed herself and that the nursing home would be getting special utensils for her. This is the type of thing that a doctor could have given us a heads up on what to expect if anybody even cared to call us. And now with this information and hindsight, I believe she was filthy when my sister got there on 12/3 because she probably tried to drink/eat something and was unable to.
All of this to say that we are extremely unhappy with the fact that no doctor ever called us, after repeated requests. Is that the standard for this hospital? Never have we had an experience like this. The doctors that refused to give us 15 minutes of their time should be ashamed and embarrassed. Is it just that fact that none of them want to be held accountable?
