I saw Dr Sangamithra Babu at Specialist Neurology Services for an ongoing minor issue that had worsened. I was recommend Dr Babu as she specialises in movement disorders. I found her very approachable and empathetic. I was sent for an MRI, blood tests and a study at Westmead Hospital. The assessment process was thorough and I received a follow up appointment with all my results, a diagnosis, and treatment plan. But mostly importantly reassurance that it was nothing more serious. The practice is only 5 minutes walk from Westmead station which was convenient as I work in the Parramatta CBD.

If I could give zero stars I would!

I am disgusted by the Lack of Compassion and Basic Courtesy – 3 July 2025

I called Westmead Neurology Outpatient Clinic on 3 July 2025 to check whether my GP referral had been received. What I got was one of the rudest and most dismissive healthcare experiences I’ve ever encountered.

I was told — bluntly — that they no longer take public neurology outpatients. Fair enough. But when I asked whether my referral had arrived, the woman refused to check. I explained I was happy to go private and simply needed to know where to send the referral and to whom. Her response? “Well, what is it for?”

I explained it was for hemiplegic migraines and family gene testing, and she replied: “Well, I don’t know. You’ll just have to see someone and they’ll work it out.”
She offered no information, no guidance — nothing but an attitude like I was bothering her.

I asked if she could suggest another public neurology clinic. Her exact words?
“I don’t know. Just Google hospitals and call them yourself.”
That is a lazy, dismissive answer and absolutely unacceptable in healthcare.

To make matters worse, I was told that any public referrals they receive are simply thrown away. Not stored, not returned to the GP, not redirected — just binned. That is beyond appalling. At the very least, they should be contacting the referring clinic to advise the referral won’t be accepted and offer redirection advice.

As someone who used to work as a medical receptionist, I understand the pressure and call volume. I know it’s not easy. But I also know that you can still speak to people with respect and provide basic information — or, at the very least, show empathy. If they’re overwhelmed by these calls, maybe they should update their voicemail or hold messaging system with information, so patients aren't left confused and treated like a nuisance when they call for clarity.

Instead, I was left feeling like I was being told to get stuffed for simply asking for help while managing a neurological condition that already affects my ability to function day-to-day. That’s not just poor service — that’s a system failure.

Westmead Neurology needs to do better. A lot better.
And I would appreciate follow-up from clinic management. Healthcare should never feel like this.
