I would hesitate to recommend Santa Monica Clinical Trials after a misleading compensation experience.

I participated in a year-long study that requires quarterly visits. I had an appointment scheduled for my Q3 visit and made plans to be there that day (as I didn’t live nearby). The office called to reschedule, asking me to push to the following week. While inconvenient I tried to make it work. I unfortunately had to change plans after car troubles, and I was then informed that if I didn’t make it that day I would be overdue for the quarterly check-in. I was not previously made aware that that was the last day before being out of compliance.

They said they were willing to reschedule for a later date, and since I was getting near the end of the study anyway they would be happy to make this the final visit. I specifically asked if this would result in any other changes to my participation, compensation included, and I was told there were no changes.

While visiting for my now final appointment, I was asked to re-sign new agreement forms and they completed a number of tests (blood draw, EKG, etc.). Only in my last couple of minutes there, as I was waiting on my check before leaving, I was informed that I would be receiving less compensation since I did not technically have a Q3 visit. This resulted in $500 of lost compensation, even though they completed all of the same end of study exams and even though they noted that many participants had been noncompliant with weekly diary entries (something that I was always compliant with, and that they thanked me about earlier in the visit).

I feel very misled after having asked about any changes to my participation based on the change of appointment timing, and at the fact that they only mentioned this change after drawing my blood and doing a lot of other personal assessments. It was evident to me that they waited until they got all of the information needed for me to be a viable study result before sharing the news.

To be clear, everyone was always very nice during my appointments and it was simple enough experience, aside from technical difficulties with the weekly diary entries. I’m not a regular participant of clinical trials, but I was previously interested in remaining on their list to hear about future opportunities. That is no longer the case, and I would not recommend them to others.

My feedback may seem harsh... but this is a research place that you spend time at. First... no hot water at night because building management turns off hot water. (so patient contacts and NO hot water) second food ordered at DENNYS at 12 noon to serve 18 hours later. cmon... this is Los angeles.... there is no reason food is 18 hours old...
