I’m healthy, plan to stay this way, am educated, understand the overall benefits and risks of participation, and the structure of study implementation.

I screened for a high paying, long term study for a drug that had not been previously tested in humans. I’ve screened for phase 1 and 2 studies before and participated in 3 studies at other facilities.

This facility is well affiliated, located, and clean, but cold inside, so be sure to bring layers. There’s plenty of parking and reception staff/area are easy to find and run on time.

This was a lengthy screening; 5.5 hours with a lot of down time, and it’s pretty solitary, so bring something to do because there isn’t any reading material or tv and phone reception inside is not good.

The vitals nurse, phlebotomist and lead Dr presented as genuinely pleasant, professional, straightforward, caring, and thorough.

I wish I could say the same of the study coordinator. I’ve travelled abroad including Japan and initially thought it might have been a cultural misunderstanding but after 3 encounters during this lengthy screening, her demeanor was consistently cold and curt, and as I asked reasonable questions, she became evasive, hostile, and verbally indicated I was uneducated. I’m a mature adult in grad school for an advanced degree in an allied health profession.

With 5 hours of preliminary tests and interviews and mostly waiting complete, the coordinator brought me to her office. She stated I qualified for the study and handed me a thick contract and a pen and showed me where to sign. I looked over the contract and noticed there were additional requirements and time that had not been discussed. When I asked about these, the coordinator reacted as though she were surprised, stammered they’d just added it, then tried to bargain on an additional amount of compensation. I replied the contract would need to reflect what she’d just said. She turned red, raised her voice indicating it was unreasonable. I calmly replied a legally binding contract needs to be accurate. She led me firmly by the arm back to the cold empty hallway to stand and wait some more.

During the additional 25 minutes I waited, I considered the situation carefully including the coordinator’s behavior and impact she would have on my well being and quality of life for 6 weeks of inpatient and (now 7) additional months of outpatient participation, and that she would be my gateway to help if there were any concerns/adverse effects.

I was called back into her office had handed the new contract. The rest looked the same but the modified area included more new requirements we’d not discussed. When I calmly asked about these, the coordinator loudly proclaimed my inability to read and comprehend the document, with another offer to modify the stipend to include the new extras.

That was enough for me to know this wasn’t right for me. The study coordinator had shown dishonesty and implied I was mentally deficient. I politely and calmly let her know I’d decided not to participate.

She didn’t ask why, just began animatedly yelling, stated I was “ignorant” she would see to it I was “banned” from any future studies at any Parexel facility globally, and refused to pay the $50 screening stipend for my (full day) of wasted time/travel/fasting.

This coordinator was beyond unprofessional, more like bipolar disorder wearing a lab coat who refused to return the paperwork I was entitled to concerning the sharing of screening lab results, DNA, and personal info (for profit) and my right to rescind that consent, which I later had to appeal to the IRB to receive.

I walked out knowing I’d made the right choice.

I cannot recommend California Clinical trials aka Parexel or any facility that would employ someone to trick people into signing a contract for previously undisclosed requirements, or employ someone with mental health issues to oversee the lives and well being of a vulnerable population for any amount of money.
