I was turned away by orthopaedic surgeons several times as I was considered too young (43) to have a total hip replacement- they all agreed i needed one but none wanted to do it. It’s best you don’t & delay it as long as you can they said, so I stayed in pain unable to participate in life with my young family- until Bjorn.
No “you’re too young” but “what do you enjoy doing?”, closely followed by “let’s do this & get you back to life with your family “
From start to finish - professional, kind & courteous bedside manner, confident & genuine. Bjorn & his team were sensational- they took care of me, explained everything & kept my family informed on the day. Post op care was superb. I’m beyond greatful - 3 months post op now, no physio, no pain just kicking balls with my kids!
Cannot recommend Bjorn enough to young, challenging patients.

Posted on behalf of my husband Robert Flynn.
I was suffering mobility issues & severe knee pain & thankfully an orthopaedic nurse st the Mater highly recommended Dr Bjorn Smith. I saw him & he recommended a total knee replacement & was very informative regarding the surgery & expected outcome. His experienced team were excellent on the day of surgery & I can't praise Dr Smith enough. My recovery was far better than our expectations & I was walking unaided by day 5 with minimal discomfort. 8 days after surgery I mowed the yard & 4 weeks later I was back to 18 holes of golf, 3 days a week. I cannot thank Dr Smith, his team, office staff & the nurses at Wesley Hospital enough for their care.

I post this as a GP/doctor with 35 years of experience.
My son had a complex hip issue so our local, also excellent orthopaedic surgeon referred us on to Bjorn/Dr Smith.
He is very down to earth, explains things in plain English and is thorough, caring, practical and listens carefully before he offers the pros and cons of different approaches to treatment.
Very grateful for everything he ha done for us.
Highly recommend.

The kindness and genuine interest shown by Dr Smith was refreshing. After years of hip pain he offered new insights. Treatment using injections and referrals to other specialists has made such a difference. He offered Telehealth appointments to monitor pain and ongoing injections while waiting for other specialist reviews which meant I was never left without guidance. I am so grateful.

Smooth second left replacement. Bjorn is a magician. His approach to pain management is spot on. I did not experience pain for the first hip, and neither for the second hip. I could stand the same day, walk the following day, and be discharged 48 hours after surgery. After the first hip, i could get on the dance floor for a cha cha cha 10 days later. First dance in three years without panadol.

It is difficult to find enough accolades to bestow upon this guy and his team, from Kylie in administration through to the anaesthetist and surgical team/s. Dr Bjorn Smith took a review of my condition at my request. I’m so grateful as I had been in excruciating pain previously. Dr Smith completed separate bi-lateral hip replacements on me and simply the entire process and professionalism was exceptional. Dr Smith and his team fully explain the entire process in words I easily understood. Now I can walk unaided and most importantly the pain is gone. Oh and apparently he does knees too! 🙏🏻😇🦈

I have just had a hip arthroscopy with bjorn smith. I am 1week out of op today. First time I have been able to straighten my leg in over 12months with not an ouch of pain. I have none of my previous pain symptoms only healing/recovery pain which comes in waves. My hip finally feels stable. Bjorn thank you so much for such a smooth operation and such professional service. To Kylie the practice manager, your assistant and professionalism is amazing. I am forever grateful to you both

Forget the rest, Dr Bjorn Smith is the best! I just recently had a total hip replacement and it was a complete success. I have chemical sensitivities & allergic to adhesives & metals etc and Dr Smith was very considerate of my allergies and allowed me to test different dressings before the surgery and allowed me to hold various different implants until we found those I least reacted to or no reaction. It was still a leap of faith but I had to do the surgery. His anaesthetist Dr Morse, was incredibly kind as well, taking the time to go through all the drugs to search for what we could use to minimize my reactions.
Kylie, his practice manager went above and beyond to help me source the right dressings. After having a huge leg length discrepancy pre-surgery, I am excited to say that my legs are now the same length my hips are now even and have been recovering very well. I highly recommend Dr Bjorn Smith who specialises in anterior THR, making for a fast recovery.
