I travelled to the Gold Coast every year from 1950 to 1963 then a few times thereafter. Apart from driving a couple of times I either flew into Brisbane or Coolangatta Airports, and visited the latter often whilst up there to meet friends. I arrived there to fly to Sydney & return on August 22, 2014. It was a time warp. The airport is just as crappy as it always was, and now it is called an "International Airport"!! I had prepaid parking in the Long Term "Covered" Carpark. I arrived in the midst of a huge downpour. My credit card wasn't recognised at the Carpark entrance, (nor upon leaving), the only thing that was "covered" was in fact the shade sails over each parking bay, so I got drenched getting to Departures. (At least Sydney & Brisbane carparks are covered all the way to the terminals.) Then of course there are no air bridges at this "International Airport", so the airline gave us each an umbrella to get across the tarmac, and I recall being stabbed in the back of my neck by the passenger behind me as I mounted the stairs. Forget about the Terminal building being rebuilt, the presence of baggage carousels etc, the whole experience was crappy, just as bad as Newcastle airport with its own lack of fully modern facilities.
