If I could give 0 stars I would, I spent nearly 2 months at Glenside last year in the Eastern Acute ward and I’ve never been so traumatised in my life. Not only by some of the other people in the ward, but by the nursing staff. I had one nurse tell me I was ā€œuninspiringā€ for being on my phone after a month of not having any way of communicating with friends and family. You would think that after a month of no contact with any friends, it would effect anyone… it seems the longer you spend here the ā€œcrazierā€ you become. Just what they want. Sorry I didn’t want to walk around the hospital grounds or colour in for the hundredth time. Changes need to be made to the way some of the staff talk about the people they are looking after, or at the very least, save the bad mouthing for when they’ve left work. We are not guinea pigs in your game. I didn’t need Aripiprazole to turn me into a walking zombie and stop me from defending myself. (PROFESSIONAL DOCTORS have since figured out I’m allergic to that medication)
Edit: ā€œDr Papā€ does not care about helping people, just slowly killing people with medication they don’t need. People with autism exist as much to your disgust. Go seek some of your own ā€œhelpā€.

Be wary of this hospital & stay switched on. Some of the staff here are quick to discredit you (to get rid of you) if you have any medical qualifications and truly seek to support the rights of in-patients and have witnessed any staff toxic behaviour. They state ā€œpolicyā€ yet refuse to share this policy with you upon request.
Unethical, total power-imbalance here.
Though there are a few lovely staff, there are a few too many staff with unprofessional, aggressive and abusive tendencies who do not comply with medical protocol and principles. This I personally witnessed during visits to see in-patients who stayed here.
This behaviour occurred after I politely asked for a copy of their policy (so I could follow their hospital policy), and immediately the nurses behaviour became angry and aggressive. It was clear they did not want to cooperate or allow me to have this. I was shocked considering I was a visitor who had peacefully come to visit the patient and these were the ā€œprofessionalsā€ looking after them. It made me feel ill.
I was refused contact details of the patients psychiatrist and nursing unit manager. Even though the patient had given me full verbal permission for details I was seeking on behalf of them.
After this incident, the psychiatrist then tried to bar my visiting rights and claimed that I was ā€œdemandingā€ and asked for health records (which was a lie). I had never asked for health records and was under the direction of the clients family/guardians. And being a clinical health professional myself, am disgusted that there is a system of ā€œprofessionalsā€ that act in such ways where they exert their power to try and discredit a patients advocate when ever they wish to display their power on the facility.
A total abuse of power. NO compassion, NO insight. Also to mention, multiple breaches to medical legislations, placing stigmas on the client by the social workers. Social workers harassing visitors with authoritarian bully behaviours witnessed by family members also.
Makes you wonder what else happens to those who are more vulnerable going through this system or who cannot defend themselves or speak up or get discredited for being mentally ill.
While I am sure some patients may become difficult for staff to manage for many reasons, but this was not one of those situations. And I am sincerely disgusted.
If this is the common practice in mental hospitals for those suffering mental illness, God help help us all.
A disgusting culture resides in this hospital that needs further investigation and quashing.
People need to speak up.
I am not done yet, and will take these matters further if I need to for the sake of these vulnerable souls that come through this damaged system.

JUST. DONT.
Been there twice, unnecessarily. Extremely traumatic experience, six months on I'm still having nightmares about it and waking gasping and sweating in terror. So I barely sleep. The experience has exacerbated my conditions AND NOW I'm too afraid to reach out to anyone, particularly those with "duty of care". Can't get the image of senior staff member verbally abusing and goading vulnerable patients out of my head.. with other staff looking on. I witnessed this both times I was there. I never felt so helpless in my life. I witnessed many unbelievable things there. They may have prettied up the outside of the place but inside is the same old horror. Just gritting my teeth through each day, I won't go back there.

Glenside Hospital has a lot of good workers and resources, is in a good location, unfortunately higher functioning covert narcissistic personality disordered people have climbed the ladder and held the best jobs, this has resulted in systemic failures. Many staff, workers and mental health nurses are very competent ethical caring humans, but to survive the toxic workplace, an overly bureaucratic system and the malignant narcissistic personality disordered community they work in, Have had to earn their income as cogs in a dysfunctional wheel, become enablers and apathetic of abuse, and are too scared to rock the status quo. Glenside Hospital needs an awareness campaign to educate staff and consumers how to avoid and navigate around their higher functioning covert narcissistic and higher functioning covert borderline personality disordered nurses, management, psychologists, psychiatrists and other abusive employees. Covert Narcissistic personality disorder abuse and exploitative behaviour is at epidemic levels within the management and the highest ranks of Glenside and SA Health and requires a safety quality risk management plan.
